Throwing their hat into the digital distribution ring, Nintendo is set to launch their own video service some time next year. Taking a different approach to the service then their competitors, the service will only air “cartoons and other entertainment content” specifically made for the service.
It’s been a while I know, I will try to go back to a more consistent schedule in the coming weeks.

HD DVD/Blu Ray Releases (VC-1)
The fine folks over at Blu Ray Statistics have sent use screen captures of the recent TDK Warner BD Live Chat with director Christopher Nolan. A amazing gallery to say the least, Nolan’s commentary on the movie are a great read that I highly recommend to anyone interested in either TDK or Christopher Nolan. Were still awaiting confirmation but it seems someone was engaged during the session, receiving Nolan’s apparent blessing!
The highly anticipated Blu Ray release of The Dark Knight, touting the VC-1 codec has sold over 600,000 copies on day 1! Compared to the former record holder, Iron Man which sold 260,000 copies on during it’s first day of sales.
Analysts claim first week sales could total as high as 1 million for the film, however some still remain doubtful. We will keep you posted regarding this matter.
Despite launching in America in 2006, many Xbox Live regions are still without a video marketplace. Sometime in 2009, you can scratch the land of the rising sun off that list! Japan is set to receive their own video store in 2009, making it the 7th region to receive the service. With Japan’s new found interest in the Xbox 360, and localized content such as Anime being brought to the service, it could be a success!
Previously, the only HD source for the Japanese 360 market was HD DVD and WMV HD DVD, will this be enough to make the 360 the sole entertainment center in Japanese homes?

Previously HD DVD excusive titles “Doom” and “The Rundown” staring ex wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have been set for a Blu Ray release. Although no tech specs have currently been released, their counterparts on HD DVD were encoded in VC-1 so we assume the Blu Ray will also be encoded in said codec.

Good news for Netflix, Xbox 360, and WMV HD enthusiasts! It seems Netflix streaming on the Xbox 360 will be using the VC-1 codec!
The movies will be streamed at a bitrate of 2.6 to 3.8 Mbps at 720p. The frame rates will range from 24 to 30p.
On the audio side of things, the films will not have 5.1 audio.
Netflix further stated, as broadband speeds improve so will the quality of their streams.
